Vehicle vandal caught by camera smashing windows, scratching cars
O’FALLON, Illinois – Surveillance cameras have captured a man investigators believe to be behind a series of infamous crimes in O’Fallon, Illinois. There are now more than a dozen reports of people breaking windows and scratching cars, mostly at the Lincoln Crossing Mall on Highway 50 near Interstate 64.
O’Fallon Police shared surveillance footage of the suspect scratching a car in the mall on Wednesday at 3:24 p.m.
Investigators believe the same suspect threw landscaping stones or bricks in business windows and car windshields for several weeks at McDonalds, the T-Mobile store, and then at Pet Smart.
Monday morning, it seemed to have happened again. A Jack Schmitt Cadillac customer was looking for cars and workers discovered two brand new Cadillacs with their windshields smashed to pieces.
O’Fallon Police also shared a video of the suspect caught red-handed to Jack Schmitt.
There is no indication that he is trying to break into vehicles or businesses.
“It’s very sporadic and haphazard in this area for the most part,” said Lt. Patrick Feldhake, of the O’Fallon Police Department.
Investigators believe the same suspect could be behind 14 incidents dating back to the past month, including at least five new vehicles scratched at Auffenburg Kia. The total damage runs into tens of thousands of dollars.
“It’s frustrating. Our patrollers, they have to come out and take pictures and do all that, find the CCTV, keep track of it all, not to mention the people who have to fix their belongings,” Lt. Feldhake said. . “You want people to come to the mall and feel like they can leave their car on the lot without it getting torn up. We have a few investigators doing the tracking, doing a CCTV review, things like that, trying to find some additional avenues that we can look into. ”
Although the motive remains a mystery, the police have solid leads on the identity of the suspect. They hope to find him before he does it again.
