New $ 1.3 Million Space-Themed Playground Underway at Lower Huron Metropark | New
Construction is slated to begin this summer on a unique space-themed playground at Lower Huron Metropark.
Feedback from the community and stakeholders helped guide the design of this new playground in the park, located in Belleville and the Township of Huron.
“The Metroparks always strive to meet the needs of the community and provide residents and visitors to the area with top-notch outdoor recreational spaces and activities,” said Metroparks Director Amy McMillan. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the feedback and ideas received, and we’re excited to launch this unique play experience to help spark the imagination and serve as a destination playground.”
McMillan said the design is a combination of creativity, accessibility, and offering something that isn’t already in the general neighborhood. Planning for the new play space began last November.
Online surveys and stakeholder conversations have taken place with many individuals and organizations such as the Detroit Association of Black Organizations and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.
From there, the Woods Creek area in the park was selected because of its visibility from the main park road, the abundance of parking, and general openness.
The playground is one of the many efforts made by the Metroparks to improve recreational opportunities in the 13 unique parks in the network. Key features include a geometric play landscape designed to reflect the solar system and a new slide for the Hedra Tower, considered the first of its kind in Michigan.
Playground consultant, Penchura, along with Michigan Recreational Construction, Inc., will lead construction, installation and development to bring the vision to life.
The new playground is slated to open this summer and be completed by the end of 2021.
