Mid-Century Modern Design by Saul Zaik is for Sale in Southwest Portland for $ 1.1 Million: Rare Open House Today
An open house is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today for a mid-century modern home for sale on half an acre in the hills of southwest Portland. Living Room Realty listing agent Gabrielle Enfield expects a crowd to come out as needed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Buying a residential property with more space, inside and out, is moving into high gear as many people have been working from home for over a year to prevent the spread of COVID- 19.
Other forces are also at work here. Portland has the lowest residential inventory for sale on record in 30 years and buyers want to take advantage of low mortgage rates.
Adding to the Interest: The mid-century modern house was designed by the late respected architect Saul Zaik in a popular style due to its graceful and understated aesthetic, reliance on natural wood and large windows, and the ease of living of an open floor plan under skylights and vaulted ceilings.
In April, the realtor for a mid-century modern home in Northwest King’s Heights saw 15 qualified buyers and their agents take turns touring the 0.27 acre property on the first full day it was on the market. at $ 1,595,000. On the second day, nine other hopeful buyers saw it. Four days later, on April 16, a cash offer was accepted.
A mid-century modern home in Portland’s Hillsdale neighborhood also sparked a storm of responses. The agent says she answered hundreds of calls, text messages and emails after listing the 6,534-square-foot corner lot at $ 829,000. It received 77 screening requests on the first day it went on sale, April 14. The best offers went up to $ 150,000 more than asking price and an offer was accepted six days later.
Enfield listed the Southwest Hills property at 4124 SW 40th Place for sale at $ 1.1 million on Wednesday April 28. For the past few days she has been busy.
“These are back-to-back screenings,” she said. “It’s great to see that Saul Zaik’s designs still hold so much reverence and that the Portland market is definitely crazy for mid-century modern.”
She meets “mid-century purists” looking for an architecturally significant house with room to make it their own. They appreciate the original features of the 1965 house and iconic Zaik details, including the ‘breathtaking great room’ with cathedral ceiling and skylights. she says.
A framed sketch of Zaik will be transferred to the next owner, Enfield says.
The two level home for sale was built in the Bridlemile neighborhood and among its 3,110 square feet of living space is a main floor master suite, three further bedrooms and 2.5 baths.
“There is room to stretch, work, play, play,” says Enfield. “Around the bend is Bridlemile Elementary.”
The 0.46 acre property has a swimming pool and overlooks a wooded cove. “It’s also pretty cool that we have the original landscaping plans,” says Enfield.
Zaik is famous for designing the 1970 Zidell House in the Southwestern Portland Hills. The octagonal dwelling that sits on the mast of a 48-foot-tall ship was commissioned by shipyard tycoon Arnold Zidell.
But the innovative architect and conservationist, who died in 2020 at the age of 93, has also left a legacy of beautiful homes that feature all the appealing traits of Northwestern modernism with a strong connection to the outdoors. .
Zaik’s easily identifiable and site-oriented work can also be seen in resorts, condominiums in Salishan and other scenic locations, as well as in residences, such as the 1956 Feldman House for the Heir to the Mountain. Borax Co.
