How to make the most of your balcony, now summer is really here
The sun is finally making its appearance in the Netherlands, just in time for June. So stop staring at those dead plants on your balcony, dust off your lounge chairs, and bring in an explosion of color with summer flowers.
If you live in a Dutch town you will probably be living in an apartment, but with a bit of luck you will have a balcony or other outdoor space where you can sit and soak up the sun with a glass of chilled white wine.
Considering what seems like constant rain over the past few weeks, you probably haven’t done anything with your balcony since winter. But with the weather forecast promising a lot of sun in the coming weeks, you have no excuse not to make the most of summer by spicing up your outdoor space.
First of all, clean up. Get rid of dead plants that didn’t survive the frost or lack of water – if they don’t have leaves now, they’re dead – and give your table and chairs a good scrub to get rid of them. Spider webs.
Now all you need is a riot of summer colors and you are good to go. No time, no idea what to do or no green fingers? Don’t worry, help is at your fingertips. Upperbloom is a new service to bring instant sunshine to your outdoor space in the form of already planted balcony boxes that will bloom until September.
‘At the moment we are offering five different arrangements for a sweet summer atmosphere, ”says co-founder Sam van der Zanden. “Order today and one of our balconies will deliver them within a week. The only thing you need to do is give them enough water – and our the planters all have a reservoir so it couldn’t be easier to organize either.
