[Design Story] Delightfully light – The Samsung Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 – Samsung Newsroom UK
Designed to be highly portable, laptops allow you to meet all of your computing needs, wherever you are. In the midst of the era of the ‘new normal’, laptops only become more and more essential to our lives as we shift to more of our work, play and interactions online. .
After observing this change, the designers at Samsung Electronics sought to further improve the portability of Samsung laptops while refining their shape and design. Lighter and thinner, and featuring revitalized colors and materials, the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 have been designed to facilitate more frequent use and longer lifecycles to better complement how users live their lives. Samsung Newsroom spoke to the designers at Mobile Communications Business who designed the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 to find out exactly what was going on in their innovative designs.
Minimization and improved ease of use
Modern laptops need to be both portable enough to carry around with you throughout the day, and capable enough to be used at all times. Thus, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 have prioritized lightweight design by making laptops thinner, lighter and flatter without compromising their high level of performance. Speaking about the design identity of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360, designer Youngmi Shin said, “We wanted laptops to have a thin and light shape. Portability becomes even more important as digital lifestyles evolve and diversify, which is why we implemented a design based on the concept of ‘incomparably thin’. “
But that lightweight aspect doesn’t just apply to the laptops themselves – designers have also redesigned peripherals and product packaging with portability in mind as well. In addition to the fact that laptop chargers and cables are smaller and lighter, the adapter, mouse, and laptops themselves can now be stored in a single layer, eliminating the need for stacking. bulky. As a result, the size of the Galaxy Book Pro 360 set has been reduced by approximately 39% for the 13.3in model and 32% for the 15.6in model.1 Commenting on how the designers achieved these reductions, designer Dongseok Lee said, “The key was to improve performance while reducing the size and weight of the Galaxy Pro series. We have worked to overcome long-standing technical limitations and optimized designs to create thin and light products. “
Comfort is also a key factor when it comes to products that will be used for a long time. As with a tablet, the Galaxy Book Pro 360 can be drawn, written and used with the new S Pen, which is 1.4 times longer and 2.5 times thicker than the previous model with a modified texture for a longer grip. firm and a larger touchpad. The power button and fingerprint sensor have also been combined, while the shift key area has also been enlarged.
Portable, but resilient
The challenge for the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 was to reduce the weight and thickness of laptops while maintaining battery power, computing performance, and durability. To do this, AMOLED panels and new battery packs have been applied, the internal design of laptops has been changed, and durability improvements have been made. As a result, the 13.3-inch Galaxy Book Pro 360 is 11.5 mm thick and weighs 1.04 kg (Wi-Fi model), while the 13.3-inch Galaxy Book Pro is only 11, 2mm thick and weighs only 868g (Wi-Fi model), making both laptops easy to hold in one hand and store in bags. On making the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 more compact, designer Hyeryoung Lee said, “We want people to tangibly feel the thinness and lightness of products when they unbox them. We have reduced the size and weight of laptop packs to capture the value of “reduction” across the product spectrum. “
In order to wrap all the necessary parts in a thinner package, designers have minimized the spaces between internal components while using aluminum and magnesium materials to make laptops lighter. Great effort has gone into finding the ideal thickness for laptops while maintaining their unique durability and luxurious metallic aesthetic. Together with the engineering team, designers repeatedly tightened the stiffness of laptops to gradually increase their overall quality and integrity. Asked how the ‘incomparably thin’ concept was achieved, designer Hoyoung Seoc said, “Non-core components of laptops have been reorganized as efficiently as possible. The tops were made flatter, the spaces between the components were reduced, and the body was trimmed, while leaving the port intact. The power key and fingerprint sensor have also been integrated for better usability. “
Since laptops generally have a relatively long lifecycle, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 thought about how to establish a sophisticated appearance that would stand the test of time. The designers analyzed which colors are least likely to go out of style while ensuring that the keyboard layout and size provide lasting comfort. Commenting on what has been decided in the Mystic color series, designer Yoojin Kim said, “We have chosen colors that are stylish and always pleasing to the eye. Since users typically replace their laptops quite infrequently, we focused on choosing colors that would remain timeless while showcasing the beauty of the laptop’s metallic finishes. “
In the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, the exterior appearance is designed to reflect internal performance. Galaxy Book Pro 360 colors include Mystic Navy, which is rugged and neutral, Mystic Silver, which brings the metallic appearance to life, and Mystic Bronze, which is rugged and emotional. The Galaxy Book Pro has a lighter feel and comes in a range of more vibrant two-tone shades that have been created by combining Mystic Blue, Textured Silver, and Mystic Pink Gold with solid black and white tones. Commenting on the differences between Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, designer Minyeong Jeong explained, “There are differences in colors and materials because the two products are fundamentally different. Since the Galaxy Book Pro 360 is a premium model, the materials and colors are more solid. The lighter Galaxy Book Pro comes in brighter colors and is finished in magnesium. “
By providing innovative answers to long-standing questions, the designers of the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 have achieved a high level of durability and usability in stylish laptop sets portable enough to take with you anywhere. . In the future, Samsung will continue to design products based on a deep understanding of the needs and lifestyles of today’s users.
