A local duo have created an exciting new sustainable clothing business with an incredible range
‘Tainted Lemons Original’ is an exciting new sustainable clothing company based in Ireland. Tainted Lemons Original features two friends Emma Dolan from Banagher, Co. Offaly and Niamh Kenny, from Athlone, Co. Westmeath.
Both are determined young women with a keen sense of fashion – and a passion for producing vintage, sustainable and accessible clothing. You can check out their full range on their website by clicking here
Emma and Niamh were inspired when they realized how dissatisfied they were with the sustainable clothing options available to them. They found that the few companies that promoted sustainability for their fashion brand were either very expensive, lacked interesting designs, or were made from unsustainable materials such as organic cotton – which can be just as unsustainable as cotton. normal cotton.
These two young ethical entrepreneurs started to research ethical materials and fabrics; with an eye on what would be best for the environment and for their sustainable ethics. When they created the Tainted Lemons brand, they had a clearly defined mission. First, they would use recycled materials that would not negatively affect the environment; second to produce more trendy, colorful and elegant options than those currently on offer; and finally to produce high-quality, sustainable clothing – but affordable for their customers.
Original entrepreneurs Tainted Lemons took on significant challenges along the way. Notably because it was extremely difficult to find a manufacturer specializing in recycled materials. However, this was their main priority as they believed that recycled material was the best for the environment and was the only way to achieve their organization’s sustainability mission. The material they found ticked those ethical boxes because it was already produced and was on its way to the landfill. Therefore, by using this material, the contaminated lemons divert the products from the landfill – and they end up extending and diversifying the life of the materials.
Tainted Lemons Original therefore carefully studied the materials of their clothing; including not only where and how it’s produced, but also who makes the clothes – and what environmentally friendly packaging they can use to send to their customers. Their purpose and mission remain consistent – they intend to be as sustainable as possible and offer a viable alternative to unsustainable and environmentally damaging ‘fast fashion’.
This dynamic new business run by women entrepreneurs ticks all the right boxes; slow fashion, small batch production, ethically made clothing, sustainable materials and compostable / recyclable packaging.
Tainted Lemons Original is also working with the East Coast Tree Project to offset its carbon footprint. Each item purchased results in the planting of a tree. On top of that, they are implementing their own ‘circular system’, which means that customers can return their items to the company when they are no longer needed – and they will return them to their manufacturers for reuse. . This prevents their clothes from ending up in the landfill in the future.
Other exciting developments have been their recently launched Kickstarter campaign (a crowdfunding website) to raise funds to help finance their ethical and sustainable business idea. The Tainted Lemons Original Kickstarter is available from April 9 to May 10, and here you can support this start-up by purchasing a sweater made from 100% recycled material – or you can just donate as little as € 1 to this eco – sustainable project.
